At Beam Construction we are dedicated to building the highest quality projects for our clients and their communities. Our knowledge, experience, and attention to detail inform every aspect of our work. We have the extensive personnel necessary to ensure high quality work and personal service. Every project we undertake is assigned a Project Manager and a Jobsite Superintendent who thoroughly know your construction needs and work closely with you and the design team. Our crews are experienced and dedicated, and perform at a consistently high level through Craft Worker Training, Safety Initiatives and Quality Control. Beam has its own carpentry, concrete, masonry, and steel erection crews, so that your project reflects our highest standards and stays on schedule.
Beam Construction Co., Inc. is a "family" oriented business now in its second generation. The company was founded in 1925 by J. L. Beam, Sr. and was operated as a sole proprietorship or partnership until its incorporation in 1953. Mr. Beam served as President of the company until his death in 1956. Tom Browne joined the company in 1954 and succeeded Mr. Beam as President upon Mr. Beam’s death. Mr. Browne subsequently purchased the assets and stock from the heirs of Mr. Beam and the other stockholders at that time. Since Beam Construction was already known as an established and reputable General Contractor, Mr. Browne opted not to change the name of the firm. Mr. Browne ran the company until his retirement in 1990 and remained Chair of the Board of Directors until his death in December 2003.
Jerry Helms, who began working for the company in 1957, was named Vice President in 1965, President and Chief Operating Officer in 1987 and remained in that position until 1994 when he stepped down to become Senior Vice President until his retirement in June 1999. Mr. Helms continues to serve the company on the Board of Directors. Gary Beam is a graduate of Kings College with a degree in Accounting. Mr. Beam began working for the company in 1971 as the Office Manager and was named Corporate Secretary in 1980, Vice President in 1987, Secretary/Treasurer in 1989 and also serves as the Company’s Controller.
Susan Lewis is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering and later earned her Master in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Mrs. Lewis began working for the company in 1985 as a Project Manager/Estimator and became Vice President in 1989 and then President in 1994. She obtained her Professional Engineer Registration in 1992.
Robert Browne is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering/Construction Option. Mr. Browne began working for the company in 1986 as a Project Manager/Estimator and became Vice President in 1989 and then Executive Vice President/Vice Chairman of the Board in 1994. He obtained his Professional Engineer Registration in 1989.
Mike Robinson holds an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering from Gaston College and began working for the company in 1973 as an Estimator, Assistant Project Manager, and Field Superintendent until 1977. He left to pursue other interests, and returned to the company in 1990 as our General Superintendent. He became Vice President of Operations in 1995. Mike has experience as a Project Manager for a specialties contractor and Field Superintendent for McDevitt & Street, HR Johnson, and Clark-Morrison.
Marshall Bailes is a graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Mr. Bailes began working for the company in 1990 as a Project Manager/Estimator. He became Assistant Vice President in 1999 and Vice President in 2000.
Steve Boheler is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Mr. Boheler began working for the company in 1980 as a Project Manager/Estimator. He left to pursue other interests in the construction industry and returned to the company in 2000 as Senior Project Manager/ Estimator. He became Vice President in 2001.
